Bathroom lighting tips

Bathroom lighting is often not given the consideration it merits. Insufficient or poorly placed fixtures can create shadows and glare, so it’s important to plan out lighting to create a practical and useable space.

Depending on the size of your bathroom, multiple fixtures in different locations can ensure you get the most out of the space.

A good place to begin is the selection of lights to illuminate an individual using the bathroom mirror. If possible, avoid ceiling-mounted fixtures that hang in front of the mirror—they will likely cast shadows making that are impractical for common activities such as shaving or makeup application.

Instead, interior designers generally recommend wall-mounted sconces for the purpose. These are ideally placed on either side of the mirror to cast light evenly. However, if space does not permit, wall sconces can be mounted above a mirror, making sure that light is directed downwards and spaced out across the mirror’s width.

Next you’ll want to consider lighting for your shower or bathtub. If your bathroom is small and your shower has glass doors, a single ceiling-mounted light might be sufficient. Consider getting creative with the fixture you choose. For example, a wide variety of hanging lights offer interesting options. Another way to experiment is with the lighting over your bathtub. A traditional chandelier can create a wonderfully romantic and relaxing space.

If you’re looking into lighting options for your bathroom, the expert staff at Elm Ridge Lighting and Interiors can help you select the perfect fixture. Located in the Golden Horseshoe area, their showroom contains a wide selection of kitchen, dining room, and foyer lighting options as well as everything from wall sconces to bathroom vanity fixtures to outdoor lights.
